Lubbock, Texas

Project Description:

For over fifty years, neighborhood families of Lubbock have been spending their summers swimming at the local Sun ‘N Fun Aquatic Center. Purchased in 2006 by the YWCA, the historic facility was in dire need of repair. With the help of local foundations, we set out to build a new community center and help revitalize the neighborhood. The new multipurpose facility delivered on the need for a full basketball court and locker rooms, racquetball court and exercise room, classrooms and administrative office spaces, multipurpose room, commercial kitchen, concession stand, and a new splash pad to complement the existing pool.

The design incorporates a modern industrial aesthetic using large scale corrugated metal panels, varying shades of regionally sourced CMU blocks, and brightly colored 38% recycled content resin panels to accent the entrances and guide pedestrian traffic. Large glazing elements with operable shades and clerestory windows provide ample daylight and customizability for users in the common, athletic, and classroom areas. GREENGUARD Children and Schools certified finishes cover the walls and countertops, humidity-, mold-, and mildew-resistant ceiling tiles free of red list chemicals are installed throughout, and other innovative and bacteria-resistant products with high amounts of recycled content were used.

Care was taken in the design to provide comfort and safety for visitors as well as staff. Sound-reducing floor and ceiling finishes in addition to adequate LED lighting helped to achieve this. Non-absorbent, non-slip flooring composed of over 90% recycled content gave a sustainable alternative to the traditional kitchen flooring while also providing comfort underfoot to reduce worker fatigue. The goal was to create a rejuvenating facility where families and children could grow and enjoy new opportunities together.

The building and its operations did not come together without challenges, however. Diverse programs such as the gymnasium, indoor rock climbing wall, and aquatic center canopy required specialized coordination with structural engineers and steel fabricators. Other small obstacles arose throughout, but it was because of our diversified and dedicated staff that we were able to accommodate and create the facility that exceeded the client’s expectations.

From the largest to the smallest details, the facility uniquely delivers to the Lubbock community an experience unlike any before, and will serve future generations for years to come.
